4 Stages of Periodontal Disease: What to ExpectX Stages of periodontal disease If your dentist tells you that you have periodontal disease, you may wonder what to expect. The good part is that periodontal disease can be treated, but it is essential to catch it early. This post will discuss the four stages of periodontal disease and what you can do to treat it.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a mild part of periodontal disease. You may notice redness, swelling, or bleeding when you brush your teeth. These symptoms are usually not painful. If you have gingivitis, you must see a dentist so the disease doesn't progress.

Periodontitis

Here, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets. These pockets become infected with bacteria. As the infection worsens, the bone and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. If you have periodontitis, your gums may bleed when you brush or floss your teeth. You may also have bad breath and a change in the fit of your teeth. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss if it is not treated.

Aggressive Periodontitis

In this stage of periodontal disease, the gum tissue and bone begin to break down faster. The plaque will develop below the gum line, eventually leading to an abscess. Aggressive periodontitis is more common in younger people but can occur at any age. If you have aggressive periodontitis, you may notice that your gums bleed easily and are red, swollen, and tender. You may notice the teeth beginning to loosen or shift.

Chronic Periodontitis

When you have chronic periodontitis, your gums and the bones that support your teeth become seriously damaged. Your gums might recede or form deep pockets between your teeth and gums. Plaque can still build up in these pockets and cause irritation, inflammation, and infection. You might lose gum tissue and bone, making your teeth look longer or loosen.

Our dentists are well-trained to identify and treat periodontal (gum) disease. We have a team of hygienists who work with our dentists to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy.
