What Is Periodontal Scaling?

Posted on 5/1/2024 by Glen Perio
Periodontal scaling is one part of a standard non-surgical dental procedure called scaling and root planing. It involves removing pockets of plaque and tartar, while root planing refers to smoothing the surfaces of your teeth roots. Scaling and planing are simple procedures that can be conducted in one appointment, typically under local anesthesia. However, depending on the severity of your gum disease, you may need separate appointments for each part of the procedure.

How Periodontal Scaling Works

When you visit our periodontist for a scaling procedure, they will first examine your teeth to determine the health of your gums and whether you need the procedure. If you qualify for scaling, the periodontist will use a vibrating tool known as an ultrasonic scaler to chip off plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. Attached to the scaler is a water spray that flushes out the plaque and tartar from your gum pockets. The periodontist may also use a small manual scaler to scrape off smaller pieces of tartar from the surface of your teeth.

When Does Your Dentist Recommend Scaling?

Periodontal scaling is recommended if you have a history of periodontal disease. The risk for gum disease generally increases as you grow older, so if you are over 30, you might be a candidate for periodontal scaling. Other risk factors include poor oral hygiene, a family history of gum disease, poorly fitted dental fillings, and health conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Benefits of Periodontal Scaling

The periodontal scaling procedure offers plenty of benefits, particularly if you are undergoing treatment for gum disease. It removes plaque and tartar from your teeth, preventing the buildup of bacteria that may exacerbate infection. As such, it can improve your smile and leave your breath smelling fresh.
