Technology & Materials

  • Pinhole®

Useful Pearl

The key to the Pinhole Surgical Technique® is that we don’t have to perform a graft, but instead go through a pinhole which is made by a needle, so there’s no scalpel or cutting at all. Then we literally shift the tissue down with very little trauma to the tissue.

Glen Perio offers "Second-Opinion" consultations for FREE so you can compare your options at NO CHARGE and make a balanced, educated decision.

Pinhole Surgical Technique

A rejuvenated smile and no sensitive roots

Gum recession & exposed roots not only makes your smile appear older, it causes painful sensitivity to temperatures and sweets. Your Periodontist will use minimally invasive microsurgical techniques to perform breakthrough gum recession treatment and gum grafts.

A faster, more comfortable procedure

A small entry point is used with the Pinhole Technique, minimizing discomfort & speeding recovery.

While traditional gum grafting (soft tissue grafting), may still be necessary for some patients, we recommend the use of this minimally invasive technique whenever possible.

The Pinhole Surgical Technique has the advantage that all teeth that have gum recession can be treated in a single session. Patients can also choose to treat just one arch or quadrant at a time. One session is normally one to two hours & uses local anesthetic. We’ve found that our patients have needed only a couple of Tylenol® after treatment.

How Pinhole Surgery Works

The affected teeth are cleaned and prepared and the gum tissue is numbed with a local anesthetic. A small entry point is made in the gum above the tooth or teeth to be treated. We use a specialized dental instrument to free the outer layer of gum tissue and gently move it down to provide better coverage for the teeth.

Next, we will use a small angled instrument to pass several collagen strips through the entry point and place them under the gums. The collagen helps to stabilize the gums.

We can correct up to 14 teeth at once in one to two hours. There is little to no post-operative discomfort.
