I Brush and Floss Daily, Why Are My Gums Still Inflamed?

Posted on 12/1/2023 by Weo Admin
Dental photography upper arch of teeth. Perhaps you are the most disciplined brusher. You brush your teeth twice daily, use mouthwash, and floss daily, however, you are surprised to see that your gums are becoming inflamed. There are a couple of reasons why this could be happening.

Brushing and Flossing don't Eliminate All Plaque and Bacteria

You may wonder why when you go for the scheduled dental exams, the dentist does prophylaxis cleaning. It is a type of deep cleaning that works to scrape off the bacterial plaque and tartar that has buildup. Often, brushing and flossing do not do away with every bit of plaque and tartar. Tartar is so stubborn to remove that you can only have it removed by a dentist using special dentistry tools.

So, Why Are My Gums Still Becoming Inflamed?

Therefore, the reason you might be having gum inflammation is that you have not gone for dental cleaning. It could also be that you brush twice, but you don't do it correctly. You don't brush for two minutes, or you do not hold the brush correctly to reach the difficult areas.

Another reason could be that you smoke. Smoking encourages tartar formation, which encourages bacterial growth and thus gum inflammation. It also impairs the body's ability to fight bacteria.

Moreover, hormonal changes could play a role in causing inflamed gums despite your brushing and flossing efforts. Genetic factors also contribute to this scenario. Some individuals are more predisposed to gum inflammation than others.

If your family experiences more cases of gum inflammation or disease, let the dentist know. You may have to change your scheduled visits to the dental office. People with higher risks for oral diseases need to see a dentist frequently.

On top of that, systemic diseases, including bruxism, diabetes, and heart disease could lead to the same case of inflamed gums. Talk to our dentist about your oral health. We will help you maintain healthy gums, strong teeth, a beautiful smile, and a functional bite.
