Image of a person showing gums, at Glen Perio. Gum disease is no laughing matter. It is one of the largest reasons people lose their teeth, and it is also one of the largest sources of infection in your mouth. Gum disease can have serious consequences for your overall health as well. It can cause heart issues and make diabetes far more difficult to control. If you are worried about gum disease, there are warning signs you can look for. Here are some warning signs of gum disease.

Stage One Warning Signs

Stage One of gum disease is called gingivitis. There are several warning signs for gingivitis. You may notice that your gums look dark pink or red instead of the typical light to medium pink for most gum tissue if you are light-skinned. If you have darker skin, your gums may be darker because of the melanin in the skin. However, even people with darker gums notice if their gums are swollen, which is another sign of gum disease.

People with Stage One gum disease may also have gums that bleed when they brush or floss their teeth. Luckily, Stage One gum disease is easily treated, and you will not have any lasting damage if you treat it early.

Stage Two and Three Warning Signs

If you have Stage Two or Three of gum disease- also called periodontitis, there are other warning signs you should be concerned about. You may notice you have very bad breath, even after brushing your teeth. You may also notice that some of your teeth are loose. Chewing could become painful. You might see spaces, or pockets between your teeth and gums, or you may notice your teeth look larger than they used to. Your gums may be pulling away from your teeth as well.

Stage Two and Three of periodontal disease mean that you need specialized treatment from a dental practitioner to save your teeth and gums from further damage. Luckily, if you stick to a treatment plan, you can have healthier teeth and gums in the long run.
