If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. However, with proper oral care and prevention dentistry, gum disease can be controlled and even reversed in its early stages.

What causes gum disease?

The main cause of gum disease is plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. When plaque is not removed through regular brushing and flossing, it can harden into calculus (tartar), which can only be removed by a dental professional.

Plaque and calculus irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed and infected. This inflammation is what we call gingivitis. If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease that can damage the bones and ligaments that support your teeth.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

The symptoms of gum disease can vary depending on the stage of the disease. In the early stages, you may not notice any symptoms at all. However, as the disease progresses, you may experience:

•  Red, swollen, or tender gums
•  Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
•  Bad breath
•  Loose teeth
•  Pus between your teeth and gums
•  Gums that pull away from your teeth
•  Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

How is gum disease treated?

The treatment for gum disease depends on the severity of the disease. In the early stages, gingivitis can often be treated with improved oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing twice a day and using an antiseptic mouthwash. Your dentist may also recommend professional cleanings to remove plaque and calculus.

If you have periodontitis, you may need more aggressive treatment, such as scaling and root planing. This procedure involves removing plaque and calculus from below the gum line and smoothing out the rough surfaces of the tooth roots. In some cases, your dentist may also recommend surgery to repair damage to the gums and bones.

How can I prevent gum disease?

The best way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and using an antiseptic mouthwash. Visiting your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings is also important, as it allows your dentist to detect and treat gum disease in its early stages.

Conclusion

Gum disease is a serious infection that can cause tooth loss if left untreated. However, with proper oral care and prevention dentistry, gum disease can be controlled and even reversed in its early stages. If you are concerned about gum disease, please see your dentist for a checkup and cleaning.
