There are three stages of gum disease, and here is information about each stage, as well as tips to help you fight gum disease.

Stage One

Stage One of gum disease is called gingivitis- you may have heard of that term. If you have Stage One gum disease, you may notice your gums are darker than normal. You might also notice they are swollen, or that they bleed when you are brushing or flossing your teeth. People with gingivitis can heal their gums by brushing and flossing properly and visiting the dentist every six months.

Stages Two and Three

Stages Two and Three of gum disease are called periodontitis. If you have periodontitis, there are several signs that your gums have been infected. First, you may notice that you have bad breath, even after you have recently brushed and flossed. Second, you may notice your teeth look longer or larger, or you may notice spaces between your teeth and gums.

These spaces, called pockets, are a sign of periodontitis. The spaces can become full of bacteria or food, which can cause more infections. Over time, if periodontitis is severe enough, you can lose your teeth, and you risk the infection spreading to other parts of your body.

How Dentists Can Help

If you think you have gum disease, you need to see a dental practitioner as soon as possible. They will be able to give you suggestions for taking good care of your teeth. They will also be able to tell you if you need a deep cleaning every three months to help your gums stay as healthy as possible. If you have lost teeth, a dentist can also give you information about restorative dentistry.
