Does Gum Disease Worsen with Age?

Posted on 9/15/2025 by Glen Perio
A Periodontist examining the teeth of a happy and comfortable senior patient. As we age, our bodies change in many ways. Our skin loses its elasticity, our hair thins, and our metabolism slows down. But did you know that aging can also affect your oral health?

One of the most common age-related oral health problems is gum disease. This chronic inflammatory condition affects the tissues surrounding your teeth, and it can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over the age of 35.

While gum disease can affect people of all ages, it becomes more prevalent as we get older. This is because our immune systems naturally weaken with age, making us more susceptible to infection. Additionally, older adults are more likely to have other health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, which can increase the risk of developing gum disease.

What are the Signs of Gum Disease?

The early stages of gum disease, also known as gingivitis, are often painless. However, there are some signs and symptoms that you should watch out for:

•  Red, swollen, or tender gums
•  Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
•  Persistent bad breath
•  Loose teeth
•  Changes in the way your teeth fit together

If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to see a periodontal dentist. A periodontal dentist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease.

How is Gum Disease Treated?

The treatment for gum disease will vary depending on the severity of the condition. In the early stages, gingivitis can often be treated with good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing. However, if the condition has progressed to periodontitis, more aggressive treatment may be necessary. This may include:

•  Scaling and root planing: This procedure involves removing plaque and calculus (tartar) from below the gum line.
•  Antibiotics: Antibiotics may be prescribed to help control the infection.
•  Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged gum tissue or bone.

Can Gum Disease Be Prevented?

The good news is that gum disease is preventable. Here are some tips to help keep your gums healthy:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.
•  Floss once a day.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
•  Quit smoking.
•  Eat a healthy diet.

By following these tips, you can reduce your risk of developing gum disease and keep your smile healthy for years to come.
