What's the Point of Temporary Crowns?

You wouldn't just throw it away, right? You'd probably try to fix it so you can keep enjoying your morning brew. Teeth are kind of the same way. When a tooth is damaged, dentists often use crowns to protect and restore its function. But before the final, permanent crown is ready, there's usually a middle step: the temporary crown.

Why Do I Need a Temporary Crown?

Think of a temporary crown as a placeholder. It's a short-term fix while the dental lab crafts your custom-made, permanent crown. There are several key reasons why your dentist will place a temporary crown:

•  Protection: A prepared tooth, meaning one that has been shaped to receive a crown, is vulnerable. Without a temporary, it's exposed to temperature changes (like hot coffee or ice cream), pressure from chewing, and bacteria. The temporary crown acts as a shield, preventing sensitivity and discomfort.
•  Maintaining Space: Teeth are notorious for shifting. If you leave a gap for too long, the surrounding teeth will start to drift into that space. This can cause problems when the permanent crown is ready to be placed, making it difficult to fit properly. The temporary crown ensures that the correct spacing is maintained.
•  Preventing Gum Problems: A prepared tooth can irritate the gums. The temporary crown helps to protect the gum tissue, preventing it from growing over the prepared tooth or becoming inflamed. Healthy gums are crucial for the long-term success of your restoration.
•  Aesthetics: While temporary crowns aren't designed to be perfect, they usually look much better than a prepared tooth. They allow you to smile and speak with more confidence while you wait for your permanent crown.

Taking Care of Your Temporary Crown

Temporary crowns are not as strong or durable as permanent crowns, so it's important to take extra care of them. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

•  Be Gentle When Flossing: Instead of pulling the floss straight up, gently slide it out to the side to avoid dislodging the temporary.
•  Chew Carefully: Avoid chewing sticky or hard foods on the side of your mouth with the temporary crown. These foods can pull the temporary off or damage it.
•  Watch Out for Sensitivity: It's normal to experience some sensitivity to hot or cold after getting a temporary crown. If the sensitivity is severe or lasts for more than a few days, contact your dentist.
•  Good Oral Care is Key: Continue to brush your teeth twice a day and use an antibacterial mouthwash to keep the area around the temporary crown clean.

The Role of Restoration Dentistry and Oral Care

Temporary crowns are an important part of restoration dentistry. They bridge the gap between preparing a tooth and placing the final restoration. Good oral care is vital for maintaining the health of your gums and teeth both before, during, and after the crown placement process. By following your dentist's instructions and practicing good oral hygiene, you can ensure the success of your crown and enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile for years to come.
