The Truth About Why Your Gums Bleed

Posted on 7/15/2024 by Glen Perio
Woman with bleeding gums before making an appointment at Glen Perio in Glenview, ILHave you ever noticed blood on your toothbrush or in the sink after brushing your teeth? While it might seem alarming, bleeding gums are actually a fairly common problem. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of adults in the United States experience some form of gum disease.

So, why do our gums bleed? The most common cause is gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease caused by plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on our teeth. If plaque isn't removed regularly through brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar, which can irritate the gums and cause them to become inflamed and bleed.

Other potential causes of bleeding gums include:

•  Brushing too hard: While it's important to remove plaque, brushing too hard can damage the delicate gum tissue and cause bleeding.
•  Using a hard-bristled toothbrush: Hard bristles can also irritate the gums and cause bleeding.
•  Hormonal changes: Women may experience more sensitive gums during pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause.
•  Certain medications: Some medications, such as blood thinners, can increase the risk of bleeding gums.
•  Vitamin deficiencies: Deficiencies in vitamin C or K can also contribute to bleeding gums.
•  Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, leukemia, and HIV/AIDS, can increase the risk of gum disease and bleeding gums.

It's important to note that bleeding gums are not always a sign of a serious problem. However, if you experience persistent bleeding, it's important to see a dentist or periodontist to rule out any underlying issues.

Here are some tips to help prevent bleeding gums:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle circular motions.
•  Floss once a day. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can remove plaque and tartar buildup and check for any signs of gum disease.
•  Eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet can help to keep your gums healthy.
•  Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk of gum disease.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your gums healthy and prevent them from bleeding. Remember, bleeding gums are a sign that something is wrong, so don't ignore them. If you experience persistent bleeding, see a dentist or periodontist to get the treatment you need.
